Biography

John Gerling has been a Senior Political Correspondent for WOLF News since 2012. Before that, he graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a Journalism degree in 2000, graduating in top 2% of his class with honors. He soon began his professional career with a local news station, KXAN. There he specialized in investigative journalism, especially with regards to government operations. He was the original reporter who exposed the Texas Attorney General's embezzlement scandal, and succeeded in saving the state millions of dollars from future embezzlement. He was awarded the Paul Bogel Award for outstanding journalism for the State of Texas in 2004 as a result.

He also reported on other issues in Austin, Texas, including gun violence and other violent crimes, in which he provided relevant information to authorities in the prosecution of James Milford, the serial killer who murdered three women in their homes from 2003 to 2005. Without his input, the court would not have obtained crucial evidence to prosecute him and eventually sentence him to life in prison.

Gerling considers himself a social progressive, supporting equal rights and opportunities for all people no matter what their background. In his time here at WOLF, he has shifted his focus from investigative journalism to exposing social issues and inequalities in society and using his platform to change them. He typically supports Democratic candidates for office, but presents a balanced report on the platforms of all candidates to ensure fairness in elections. He is passionate about informing the public enough to where they can make the best decisions for themselves.
